The fund shall be awarded as follows, with a goal of awarding to up to three students per year. A combination of all preferences below may be used to achieve this goal. The fund is to be awarded by the Office of Enrollment Services. 1) The first preference is to support undergraduate or graduate students who are children of active independent shellfishermen in Rhode Island, but not more than one from the same family. Copy of parent’s shellfishing license is required. The distribution of the award will be up to three students each receiving one-third of available award, or to two students each receiving one-half of available award, or to one student receiving full available award, if he or she is the only candidate. 2) The next preference is to support undergraduate or graduate students who are blood relatives (niece, nephew, sibling, grandchild) of active independent shellfishermen in Rhode Island, but not more than one from the same family. Copy of relative’s shellfishing license is required. The distribution of the award will be up to three students each receiving one-third of available award, or up to two students each receiving one-half of available award, or to one student receiving full available award, if he or she is the only candidate. 3) In the event the scholarship cannot be awarded as described above, the next preference is to support graduates of LaSalle Academy or East Greenwich High School, based on financial need. The distribution of the award will be to up to three students receiving equal amounts of available funds. Upon the death of the steward, Raymond A Giornelli, the principal of the fund E333 will be converted to spendable to provide an annual award of $7,500 to up to three students who meet the above criteria, and to provide an annual gift of $2,500 to the Graduate School of Oceanography Dean’s Excellence Fund to support plastics research in Narragansett Bay.
